BRIDGES

What are bridges made of?

Bridges are fabricated from exactly the same material choices as crowns are
(see
CROWNS).

Who needs bridges?

Every patient is different in their particular treatment needs and wants. Most of
this depends on: where and how many missing teeth there are, if you practice
good oral hygiene and keep your other teeth and gums in good health, if you
have any loose teeth, and if there are any underlying health issues and habits,
such as smoking...and of course
your particular choice! As you can see, there
are thousands of different combinations that make every patient a special
consideration.

Your dentist will discuss with you if you're a candidate for a bridge or if a different
treatment option is more appropriate. Other treatment options, depending on the
individual case, may also include implants, partial dentures ("partials") or full
dentures.

What happens if I don't get a bridge?

If you choose not to replace missing teeth in your mouth, even after given other
alternatives such as partial dentures, you need to be aware of what will
eventually happen in the mouth.

When there are empty spaces in the mouth around existing teeth the teeth feel
no pressures on them from those spaces. As a result, these teeth will begin
moving into those empty spaces. They will be forced into those areas from all the
other teeth in the mouth. Usually, teeth behind the empty space and teeth on the
opposite arch of teeth will begin moving into those spaces. What eventually
happens in the mouth are crooked teeth, angled teeth, teeth that are
"super-erupting" or "extruding" (teeth from the opposite arch that push their way
into the space), biting problems, food traps between teeth, more cavities, and
sometimes TMJ (jaw joint) problems.

As you can see, it is very important to close these spaces as soon as possible to
prevent any of these problems from developing.

What are bridges?

Bridges are two crowns (see CROWNS) fused to a solid fake tooth. The bridge
is all one unit and is cemented all at once.

Bridges are one of the best permanent choices for patients that have missing
teeth in the mouth. Essentially, the bridge is made up of three parts: two
"anchor" type crowns that hold the bridge in place and a central 'bridge' tooth or
teeth that fill in the missing teeth in the mouth.

The treatment for a bridge is made the same way as that for a crown, with one
exception: there are more teeth to prepare and shape for the bridge to fit on to.
(Depending on the
length of the bridge, there may be an additional 'try-in
appointment' before the permanent bridge is completely fabricated).
