What is a deep cleaning?
A deep cleaning is a very thorough scaling and
planing of the roots of the teeth and other parts
that are 'deep' into the gums. Because the roots
are very sensitive areas of the teeth to many
people, the areas that require deep cleaning
need to be numbed first. The dentist will then
use an instrument that vibrates very fast and
breaks any hard debris from the tooth surface.
The instrument that is used also sprays water
onto the teeth while it works.
Why are deep cleanings necessary?
On your first visit to the office the dentist will do
several thorough exams to check the health of
your teeth, gums and other soft tissues around
your mouth. When the dentist checks your
gums, they can determine if there exists any
type of disease present.
The necessity of deep cleanings relate to the
stages of gum diseases. The first stage is
called gingivitis. If debris is left on the teeth
without brushing, and especially flossing, the
natural bacteria on your teeth will begin to
release harmful chemicals that will begin to
irritate the gums, among other things. The
gums start to become reddened, swollen and
may bleed when trying to floss or even brush.
The next stage, if gingivitis is left to progress
further, is mild periodontitis. Further
progressions are moderate, severe, and

advanced periodontitis. All periodontitis not only shows the same signs as gingivitis, but
also shows bone loss around the teeth. Gum loss also follows the loss of bone that
holds the teeth in place.
All of these diseases are easily found by the dentist. All are also caused by the bacteria
in the mouth and hardened collections may accumulate around the teeth that can only
be treated by your dentist. Once this is removed then it is VERY important to continue
good oral hygiene on your own, along with keeping your regular check -ups and
cleanings. Periodontal maintenance may be necessary to prevent more damage to the
gums and teeth from periodontal disease.
