SEALANTS
What are sealants?

Sealants are glass-like coatings that are "painted on" to the biting surfaces of teeth
to prevent cavities from forming. They are usually only placed on new adult teeth in
children that do not currently have cavities on the tooth.

Sealants are excellent preventative treatments for children and should be placed on
all of the big back teeth (molars) once they are formed. No "operative" work from the
dentist is necessary. The dentist uses a special tooth-colored formulation that is
painted on to the tooth and then light-cured (a bright light is shined on the sealant to
allow it to harden into a glass-like substance). Afterwards, the sealant is smoothed
with an instrument.

Sealants may need to be placed on a periodic basis, due to their wearing away or
chipping from normal biting and chewing of rough foods.
